Today is Blog Action Day! Over five million people are reading/writing/listening/thinking about the environment today … and hopefully the message will spread and inspire change, because as much as we don’t like to think about it — we need it.

“Green” is the hot topic today. But going “green” is not just about saving the environment it’s also about saving “green” — as in money. Technology is becoming smarter, finally realizing that by saving energy and recycling materials … you’re also saving some cash! Going green can be a win - win solution for the environment and for business.
Green IT solutions are thriving. Today there are more tools and resources to make environmentally friendly choices within the industry. There are also more stringent standards in place regarding energy efficiency and e-waste management. And the right “green” choices can also be great money savers.
The IT industry is making a green comeback by addressing environmental issues and by creating positive change. Technology is on a mission to redeem itself from the years of damage that started with the Industrial Revolution. Could this be the start of a green revolution? Let’s hope so … our time might be running out!
Nearly 15 year ago, 1500 accomplished scientists from 71 counties signed the Warning to Humanity, which stated:
“Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources … fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about.”
The document outlines the major stresses on our environment, ranging from ozone depletion, exploitation of depletable ground water, loss of soil productivity, to the irreversible loss of species, and our current economic practices that are damaging the environment around the globe.
Let’s face it, we’ve dug ourselves deep. At this point immediate action to change is just not enough. Bringing environmentally damaging activities under control and finding a way to effectively manage our resources needs to be a drastic, revolutionary and most importantly a rapid change.
As Dave Pollard of How to Save the World points out: “just having everyone ‘do their best’ to make the world a better place will not be enough.” To start the reversal of all the years of damage and to start producing improvement that is noticeable what we need is a revolution, one that will have a direct impact on every aspect of our daily lives.
Make today the start of your own green revolution! See what you can do to make a difference. For inspiration, read some green tips form the Union of Concerned Scientists or get involved with Greenpeace!
