New Release: Cisco CCNA Security Training

Kasia GrabowskaWe have just released a new training package covering Cisco CCNA Security.

Our new training provides complete coverage of the Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security (IINS) 640-553 exam and will teach you how to develop a security infrastructure, recognize threats and vulnerabilities to networks, and mitigate security threats in small to medium size enterprise branch networks.

If you haven’t heard of the CCNA Security Certification, don’t worry, you’re not alone. This is a brand new certification from Cisco that just came out last year.

Here’s some more information about the certification, the exam, and our training:

What is the Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security (IINS) Certification?

The CCNA Security Certification is a brand new certification from Cisco that became available on June 24, 2008. It’s a part of three new CCNA specializations: CCNA Voice, CCNA Wireless and CCNA Security.

The exam that is required for the CCNA Security certification is the 640-553 IINS (Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security) exam which tests security knowledge and skills for job roles in Cisco environments such as Network Security Specialist, Security Administrator and Network Security Support Engineer.

The CCNA Security Certification is the first step for individuals who want to obtain their CCSP (Cisco Certified Security Professional) Certification. Actually, to be more precise it’s the second step, as the CCNA Security Certification requires an active CCNA Certification.

The IINS exam covers installation, troubleshooting and monitoring of Cisco routers and switches. A Cisco Security candidate should have knowledge of core security technologies and how to develop security policies.

Some of the topics on the Cisco Security exam include:

  • Security threats facing modern network infrastructures
  • Securing Cisco routers
  • Mitigating threats to Cisco routers and networks
  • Implementing secure network management
  • And a few others

The IINS 640-553 exam is a typical 90 minute exam with 55-65 questions. Like many other Cisco certs, it’s valid for three years. As mentioned above, the only prerequisite for this exam is a valid CCNA certification.

What are the Advantages of Obtaining the CCNA Security Certification?

Security knowledge and skills are in very high demand in the networking job market. The CCNA certification provides you with an introduction to Cisco network security, whereas the Cisco IINS will give you the knowledge and skills that any Cisco network admin is expected to have.

As Chris Bryant, CCIE certified instructor and experience Cisco professional points out, “You cannot be a Cisco network admin and now know Cisco security. Knowing security is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity”.

One major advantage of going through CCNA Security training and obtaining the certification is that it can help you advance your career and distinguish yourself from other CCNA professionals. If you’re a Junior network admin, it will help you qualify for a Senior job role and don’t forget, passing the IINS exam will get you one step closer to your CCSP Certification.

However, more than anything the CCNA Security Certification offers job security, especially for less experienced CCNA’s. In these difficult times, it’s important to make yourself “valuable” to your current or potential employer, and this certification will help you accomplish that.
