This was the first part of the CompTIA A+ training that made me feel confident about my knowledge of computers, becasue it actually included a few things I already knew! There was still plenty I didn’t know so I was able to learn a lot. But knowing some of the basics of using Windows, like display options, taskbar properties, user options, keyboard shortcuts, and the like, made me feel a bit less nervous about the impending exam.
The two videos that comprise part 5: Introduction to Operating Systems, covered exam objectives 3.0 and 3.1. David Davis, the instructor, discussed the OS history and the Operating Systems in use today. He also went over the OS terminology and how to perform common OS tasks. Other topics that were covered included: file systems, directories, files, and important system files. And of course, the basics of using Windows, which I especially enjoyed since it made me feel like I actually know something!
As I’ve mentioned in one of my previous posts, the information in this training is beneficial for any computer user — not just those of us who are studying for the A+ exam. I wish I would have known some of these things a long time ago; I would have made a better student, a better employee and I wouldn’t have had to rely so much on the busy IT departments.
So, even though Train Signal’s CompTIA A+ training is designed to prepare me for the A+ exams by covering all of the exam objectives, and making sure I understand all the basics, I think this whole experience is more than just an IT Cert. I would want to know this stuff even if I wasn’t studying for an exam. I spend way too much time on my computer (a minimum of 8 hours a day and on most days, much longer), so it only makes sense that I understand how my PC works.
Why didn’t I think of this before? Why had I not gone out and completed a computer course on my own? I really don’t know. I guess I thought it would be too hard. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that this is easy! But I never thought of myself as the techy type (geeky yes — but not really techy) so I didn’t think I could do this.
I’m glad I did! Are you? What are your thoughts about IT training, IT certifications and exams? Let me know and I’ll see you next week!
