i undocked my gadgets from the sidebar.

it is set to transparent.

i have used the x to close one, but want to restore it.

cannot bring up the sidebar to restore my gadgets.</description>

right click on a blank area of your desktop
click on personalize
click window color and appearance
choose windows aero as your color scheme

That should fix the problem as it will enable the transparency.</description>

right click on your sidebar, select properties, and make sure that the arrangement option: sidebar is always on top of other windows - is unchecked. 

I played around with my sidebar and when I checked off that option my sidebar background went from translucent to opaque.
