Good article, but don't forget to set the service WMSvc (Display Name: Web Management Service) to startup automatic, the default is manual. This cannot be done from within the IIS manager, use the Services MMC for this.

Christian Saborio -

Sorry I missed your comment, though from looking at the error it looks like a problem with the administration.config file. I have read on IIS.net that this might be because of adding a custom module and from your site it looks like your are a programmer. Any chance you have done something in that area and not formed the XML correctly?

NicMartel -

Let me say to start that your hosting company is crap if this is how they treat you. The change you need would take someone about 2 minutes to do. You should definitely look at changing hosts.

That being said, the client portion of IIS 7 Manager will work from Windows XP Pro, but you cannot connect to localhost on XP because XP will not run IIS 7. The WMSVC service is what needs to be configured on the web server running IIS 7. If you look at the above article at the section called "Configure Management Service (WMSVC)" you will see what needs to be done on the web server to allow connections. Not to mention if they are using a firewall that is not built in to Windows Server they will need to open up the port 8172 (Default but can be changed) on the external firewall.

Hope that helps.

My hosting company upgraded my web site to new servers.
My site started to crash, because it points to the wrong default document.

The option to set the default document that I had on my original servers does not exist on the new server.

They tell me to download IIS 7.0 Manager so that I may remotely manage my IIS settings and set my default document.

I am on WINDOWS XP Pro SP3... I install IIS 7.0 Manager and it refuses to connect even to the localhost.

I find out that I need WMSVC started on the system... but that service is not even in the services list.???

Can this be done on WIN XP Pro?

Thank you.

Hi. First of all, thanks for putting this tutorial, it has helped me immensely.

I am trying to get this running on a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 R2. I have been able to get pretty close, but I get the error seen below:

http://img.skitch.com/20081108-jjg5ihi63mkdxu5g9uhgy5mpsm.jpg

after the certificate has been issued and the connection was made. When I am asked to name the connection (step 6) and I click finish, I get the error above.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance!

Ardhendu-

You can find an article on installing IIS7 on Vista at:
http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/28/installing-iis-70-on-windows-vista/

The only problem is that the only versions of Vista supported are:
    * Windows Vista Ultimate Edition
    * Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
    * Windows Vista Business Edition
    * Windows Vista Enterprise Edition

So without an upgrade to at least Home Premium I think you will be out of luck.

Sorry,
Dave
