Microsoft’s getVIRTUALnow Conference in Chicago
A few weeks ago I posted about two free upcoming Virtualization events.
The first one, Microsoft’s Virtualization event, was in Chicago this week and I got a chance to go. This was my first IT conference and I have to say I was very impressed. It was a whole day of learning really cool stuff — all on Microsoft’s tab.
Gosia and Dave were there with me, and we all got a chance to see the seminar sessions and participate in the hands-on labs.
Microsoft sent us away with a free t-shirt and a voucher for a virtualization prep course and for the 70-652 exam. Pretty cool.

What I Learned at the getVIRTUALnow Conference in Chicago
As I mentioned before, this was a really great learning experience and not at all what I expected my first IT conference to be.
So what did I take away from this event? Let’s take a look …
- More than I wanted to know about AppV — which is actually pretty cool. Some things I didn’t even know were possible, like virtualizing and migrating applications, and the millions (I know, I’m exaggerating a bit) of options that can be utilized.
- A general idea of how licensing for Virtualization works — it’s a bit more complicated than I imagined, but it seems that Microsoft is trying to make it easier for people to utilize virtualization.
- A whole alphabet soup of new acronyms — IT people really love their acronyms, and Virtualization fans are no different. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised by this, but man, at times it seemed like the speakers were talking in a foreign language.
- How to use ZoomIt — an awesome screen zoom and annotation tool for presentations, which is really fun. One of the speakers demonstrated it during his presentation.
- And finally, I learned that there’s no need to bring a pen — nearly all the vendor booths were stocked with free ones!
