I want to know exactly how many people understand how Computer Networking works? A show of hands please? Now for those that have their hands up: how many of you have a certification, a college degree, or siginficant training and experience with networking? I hope all of you still have your hands up, if not — then there must be something wrong with me, because I’m having a hard time understanding it all.
I see the big picture — the need for and the purpose of computer networks — but how it all woks is still a little bit like magic to me. I keep telling myself that I was probably just tired when I watched the video covering Computer Networks, but I know that’s a lie. I listened to every word and even took good notes, but for some reason I just don’t get it.
I thought I understood networking before, but after watching the video on the topic, I’m a little overwhelmed. Now that I learned how many different types of networks exist, how uniqely they function, and the different components that make them work — I feel lost. Throw in the OSI Model, the different Protocols, Addressing, Cabling, Connectors … no wonder this is a whole separate certification, this stuff is complicated. Networking is not as easy as I thought it was and I’m going to have to do a lot of work to get a good grasp of it.
For those of you who are studying for your Network+ exam good luck! Bill — I don’t know how you did it — congratualtions on your recent Netowrk+ certification!
For those in the A+ boat with me, here’s some exam objective information. Part 10 of CompTIA A+ training is an introduction to networking that covers exam objectives 5.1 (Identifying fundamental principles of networks) and provides an introduction to objectives 5.2 and 5.3 (Installing, configuring, optimizing and upgrading networks and identifying tools, diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques for networks).
This was a very detailed video that introduces a lot of new vocabulary, new concepts, and overall a ton of information. For someone that’s new to networking (like me), this one will definitely require a few reruns and a lot of studying.

The best way to learn networking is by adapting a hands on approach. :-)
So you try small things at home and then build on it !
Personally I can’t remember anything until I have done it physically.

Have you ever seen the technology used to explain complex theory or even how a piece of machinery works? Vivid graphics and diagrams or rotating 3D visual affects to help understand and drive the point home. All the while leaving the user mesmerized? It may sound crazy but driving the point home with WOW graphics works for me. Can still remember when it was explained to me that gravity could bend light then the graphic was popped on the screen and boom I understood it. Still hard to believe but there it was. I don’t have the talent to create the level of graphics which I mention here but close second it to take the theory and create Power Point slides. Later I come back and see how close I came to hitting the point I was trying to translate. Time consuming but for that theory that just won’t stick to my teflon brain it is essential.

Thank you for the advice! I really appreciate it.
I’ll have to give it a try, since listenin/reading about and even seeing networking concepts is just not enough for me. Hopefully this will do the trick!
Thanks!
