John:

I see where I say that I use Norton but I'm still looking for the part in the article where I say you should too. Also, don't most "average" users boot their computers, browse directories, move and copy files, install and uninstall software, convert music files to other file types, and zip & unzip files?

What else would you say the average user does? Your one example was play games. Personally, I don't think the average user plays games that would require a lot of resources. My definition of the average user is someone that surfs the internet, uses email, and does typical word processing. When I think average user, I don't think of a "resource hungry" gamer.

I see where you say that personally you use Kaspersky. Disregarding the editor's choice in the pcmag.com chart above, the percentages speak for themselves. Norton and Kaspersky were not much different when it came to performance for the average user and whatever you're inclined to believe, that comparison is backed up by facts.

Your advice here is completely wrong, Norton Antivirus is probably one of the worst choices you could make, it IS a resource hogger ( those stats missed out major things a normal user would use their pc for which would slow you right down should you have Norton installed - play games for example ).. pc mag is paid by ( yup you guessed it.. symantec, ) our friendly neighbourhood Norton makers . as such they are paid to promote it and make it 'look' good, the same can be said for pc world etc...

symantec are victims of their own success, they have got so big and have sold so many copy's of their antivirus and security suites that they are literally being 'picked on' by hackers and other malicious users. Viruses and malware etc are being coded to specifically target machines with Norton on them, due to this, even their firewall is like Swiss cheese, there are so many holes in it that it makes it almost impossible not to bypass it if you tried...

I personally use kaspersky, along with spybot search and destroy, and malwarebytes, as no antivirus in infallible, others that are good are mc'afee, zone alarm and avg... please get rid of it as soon as possible, and never use it again..

Norton has 1 great product.... Norton Ghost, they should leave it as that !!

Just Curious:

It's interesting that you say that because that is something I specifically address in the article. Take a look at the first graphic in this article, which was obtained from pcmag.com. PCmag.com actually outlines the overall performance of each security suite and Norton came out on top with the best performance rating. So if everybody knows that Norton is a resource hog then someone should inform PCmag.com.

The interesting thing about a browser hijacker is that you may not notice it right at first. It took me a couple hours to realize what was going on but I slowly started noticing that any site I went to that had advertising in the side bar was displaying the same advertisement.

Arbee:

You should be fine to update to SP3. I actually went ahead and did that on one of my XP machines and I haven't had any problems.

Hi, i have a question about Win XP SP3. Windows update has been telling me about SP3 installation but I have been wary to do it lest things stopped working as they usually do. What do you advise? Thanks
