Virtual Private Server is a server that runs through virtualization process on a physical computer. This does not have to be a MS Windows Operating system, it can be anything you want.
You can have multiple Virtual servers running at the same time on that single machine. You configure each VS by partitioning a single physical server. This technology is getting more and more popular in today’s data centers where space and electrical power are quickly becoming more of an issue.
As with all technology, there are downfalls. You have to pay close attention when configuring security on VS as it can be quite tricky.
The initial cost to move to the virtualized environment is somewhat expensive (but every time we move to a new technology or even a new operating system, the initial cost is outrageous … think long-term).
You need to carefully evaluate the software and applications that will be moved to a virtual server to make sure performance will not be a problem. However, if you setup and configure all the virtual servers correctly you will save space, electrical power, and a lot of money in the long run. Full Story.
